Too many large engineering/science projects fail in terms of budget overruns, schedule slippage, or under-performance. This has profound implications not only for construction and commissioning organisations, but also for private and public stakeholders, and the clients or users. Successful design and delivery are therefore not only commercial necessities but also a societal imperative.

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition for the importance of new approaches to lift the probability of project success. This goes especially for truly complex projects of the type often found in this new era of mega-science (e.g. The Large Hadron Collider, the Square Kilometre Array Telescope, and the Joint Strike Fighter).

In this webinar, Phil discusses ideas around strategic risk management for complex projects, and why conventional practices are flawed in the world of irrational projects and ‘Black Swans’. He also discusses the concept of “mission-assurance” and argues that a larger investment in building early resilience pays off handsomely.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Phil Crosby is an ICCPM Fellow and major project specialist, with experience in long range strategic planning and risk management of large-scale complex projects. As an experienced business strategist, Phil has supported the delivery of major projects in industry and government, including the ongoing Square Kilometre Array (SKA) mega-science project.

Phil was a member of the CSIRO Leadership Team at the Australia Telescope National Facility and continues to support the success of CSIRO major projects as a CSIRO Fellow, and Chair of CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science’s (CASS) Project Review Board. Between 2009 and 2011, Phil was seconded to the SKA Program Development Office in the University of Manchester (UK), responsible for the development and implementation of industry engagement plans, and support of SKA procurement strategies. He also spent time close to the Australian SKA site in Western Australia as the CSIRO Assistant Director (WA) with responsibility for CASS’s executive level interactions with State Government, WA astronomy institutes, and industry.

Phil’s PhD research focussed on improving success in high-technology mega-projects. This research, in conjunction with his experience in risk management and mission assurance is making a valuable contribution to CSIRO new space activities and their increased engagement with start-ups. Phil currently Chairs the Space Industry Advisory Council and sits on the ICCPM Advisory Board.
