ABOUT THE WEBINAR

Despite the considerable investment in Complex Projects globally, leading industry research still continues to suggest that as much as 70% of such projects will fail to meet their investor sanctioned cost, schedule and benefit objectives. Even more alarmingly, is how this recorded hurdle rate has been observed to have remained consistent across most major project sectors for more than 50 years.

This, of course, poses a severe dilemma for the project risk management profession as such high failure rates suggest that the conventional, industry-accepted risk management methods do not consistently work in projects of higher complexity. After all, isn’t risk management about ensuring projects succeed in meeting their objectives?

AIM

This webinar will discuss some of the challenges of conventional risk management methods in project environments of advanced complexity, and specifically how adopting a systems thinking approach to project risk management may help to better address such challenges.

Concepts to be discussed in relation to risk management include:

  • Systems

  • Complexity

  • Uncertainty

  • Emergence

  • Disruption

  • Resilience

  • Dependency

  • Vulnerability

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Warren is an Engineer, Risk Professional and Complex Systems’ Specialist, who has particular interest in understanding how the complexity sciences may offer a better means to controlling disruptive phenomena within complex organisations.

Warren consults to industry on how to improve Governance, Risk & Assurance practices so that they may reflect not only the degree of investment at risk, but also the specific complexities in play.

Warren is also currently engaged in a higher degree in research (PhD) program at the Queensland University of Technology, whereby he is Investigating a Systems Thinking Approach To Controlling Risks within Complex Projects.
