SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP

This webinar stems from the discussions of the Managing Risk in Complexity Special Interest Group (MRC SIG).
Webinar participants are invited to join a 30-minute meeting immediately following the webinar to preview MRC SIG discussions.

ABOUT THE WEBINAR

Worldwide, complex projects struggle. It is widely recognised that current risk management thinking and practice are not effective in such environments.

Risk management in complex projects was a focus of ICCPM’s 2020-2021 International Roundtable Series. ICCPM now has a Special Interest Group (SIG) for Managing Risk in Complexity to that aims to find practical responses to the difficulties identified. SIG working-groups have tackled the topics:

A. Identify, review and report on risk approaches and tools that enable better visualisation of complex interconnected risks, provoke investigatory dialogue and lead to deeper insights for leaders making decisions, and

B. How can we “wake up” project leaders and stakeholders who are reluctant to accept or apply complexity methods and models.

Australian and international project managers with diverse experience in a wide range of complex projects have worked on the group topics for over 9 months.

AIM

This webinar will provide participants with practical risk management insights from the MRC SIG working groups.

Participants will be briefed on:

  • How to identify risk tools and methods that are effective in complex project environments
  • Some example tools and how and when they might best be used
  • Causes of resistance to accepting and addressing complexity in projects
  • Approaches and strategies to work effectively with project complexity

MRC SIG MEETING

Following the webinar, attendees are invited to participate in a short MRC SIG meeting. That meeting will review the progress of the working groups and where to go next. Everyone in attendance will have an opportunity to influence the focus of future MRC SIG work.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Richard Barber

Dr Richard Barber has an extensive project leadership background in large Australian Defence projects. His later PhD research studied hidden and systemic risk in complex projects.

Richard is also the MD of RiskIQ Global Australia.

Davin Shellshear

Davin Shellshear has, in executive roles in Brisbane Water, initiated and implemented major asset management systems, improved customer relation management, and introduced and managed cultural change programs to radically improve performance and competitiveness of service delivery.

Davin is the MD of Management Drives Australia which analyses and quantifies leadership vulnerability in complex major projects.

Dr Stephen Grey

Dr Stephen Grey has a PhD in physics and has worked in diverse large projects in the UK. Stephen has a particular interest in the application of modelling techniques to uncertainty in cost estimates, implementation schedules, cash flows and other quantitative measures of project outcomes. He has been at the forefront in developing techniques for quantitative project cost and schedule risk modelling.

Stephen also maintains a strong interest in complexity science and its potential applications to risk management and the management of large projects.
