Research Outline

This study will offer a comprehensive understanding of net zero carbon building design and construction practices in Australia, including country specific enablers and barriers to implementation.

Research aims to investigate the net zero carbon building design and construction practices in Australia, including country-specific enablers and barriers to implementation
Objectives
• To critically review net zero carbon building design and construction practices
• To analyse carbon reduction practices, techniques, and technologies in Australia
• To prioritise the barriers and enablers to achieve net zero carbon targets in Australia
• To propose the ways to accelerate the achievement of net zero carbon targets in Australian construction industry

About the Researchers:

Dr. Sepani Senaratne joined Construction Management team in the School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment at Western Sydney University in December 2012. She is an Associate Professor in Construction Management and is the outgoing Director of Academic Program (Construction Management). Sepani is actively working in the leadership team at the research Centre for Smart Modern Construction (c4SMC) as the Deputy Director Research. A/Prof. Senaratne is also a member of WSU Professoriate Leadership Group in its executive team. She is a joint-coordinator of the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB) task group TG124 on “Net Zero Carbon Building Design and Construction Practices”. She is also a member of the WSU Urban Transformations Research Centre.

Dr Senaratne has diverse academic experience in quantity surveying, construction and project management disciplines. She is an active researcher and has widely published in leading journals and conferences in the Built Environment as evident in her Google Scholar profile. Her work is internationally recognised by several research awards such as Outstanding Paper in the 2022 Emerald Literati Awards; Emerald Outstanding Reviewer Award 2016; Several Best Paper Awards at leading conferences; Emerald Awards of Excellence’ for Highly Commended Paper in 2019 and several Outstanding Research Performances Awards at UoM. She is actively serving the academic community as a paper reviewer, postgraduate thesis examiner and member of conference committees.

About the Centre for Smart Modern Construction:

The Centre for Smart Modern Construction (c4SMC) is an industry collaboration initiative embracing smart technologies and processes in delivering a modern construction industry. Research projects are focused on sustainability (and circular economy), digitalization, industrialization, resilience, and globalization through academic, industry, professional body, and government collaboration. The Centre is a recognized entity for construction industry and built environment policy related research. The Centre is home to over 20 doctoral and post-doctoral researchers representing disciplines of construction, project management, engineering, computing and architecture.

The Centre is the host for the Construction Informatics lab located in Kingswood campus. The lab is the base location for construction software development and experimentation. Core areas of research include, blockchain, IoT integration, BIM, AR, VR and XR technologies, digital scanning and imaging, deep learning and other AI technologies.
