I am also interested in the idea of low cost on entry principles where we can offer people a few basics that will allow them to find their way without investing in a lot of study – Cynefin doesn’t embody much advice in its raw form but the ideas of identifying Obvious, Complicated and Complex elements and adopting strategies that suit each one is not too hard to grasp and can offer an 80/20 payoff
Progress will be on many fronts and, I think, mostly in small scale changes or developments that don’t break anything but edge us towards a more useful way of working with complexity
Up::1That’s a really great question, Stephen. It’s also difficult to answer. I persoally reckon we should work hard to avoid the requirement for a substantial ‘rite of passage’ as you say.
To do that, we would need to think about this challenge as it applies not only to complex projects but also to the career path for project leaders and to managementy education and training at all levels.
Perhaps it would be a start to ensure that complexity education and training is always part of mainstream management education and training. Rather than doing traditional management and/or project management training and then upskilling to complexity, we should regard them as one thing.
In terms of the PMBOK, it would need to become an effective guide for all projects, whether relatively simple or much more complex.

The question I asked was not clear enough I’m afraid
I was not raising the issue of dealing with complexity in projects getting too big to be useful but asking whether the assembly of concepts, relationships and methods might be rather large
I have a foreboding sense of another PMBOK being written
Is there an accessible entry point in the work to date, where newcomers can start, invest a small amount of effort and get a payoff, or is it moving towards being a substantial rite of passage for anyone coming in fresh?
