      Hi Heather

I use Causal Loop Diagrams in the work I do on behavioural risk analysis. It helps some to see more clearly what is going on, and because the detailed data required for System Dynamics is often difficult to obtain or unreliable, I think CLDs provide a valuable tool to understand the processes without pretending we can analyse in detail human relationship events. As an example, I find the attached diagram to be of interest in thinking about coercive control

      Cheers

      Davin

Origin and theoretical basis of causal loop diagrams ?

Please can members comment about the provenance of this mapping tool ?

Here are some references that I’ve found

(1921 reference – early construction of directed graph models of cause and effect – path analysis ) Wright, S. “Correlation and causation” Journal of Agricultural Research

(1963 reference – apparently the first published, formal use of a causal loop diagram to describe a feedback system) Maruyama-Second Cybernetics

(2001 reference – provides some background) Cybernetics and Second-Order Cybernetics

(2004 reference – provides some background) Second‐order Cybernetics: An Historical Introduction

Use of the mapping tools GERT and VERT ?

Please can members comment about the current popularity of these tools ?

Are they used much these days, or have they been superceded by other tools ?

Here are two references that I’ve found useful

(1978 reference) GERT analysis – graphical evaluation and review technique (pmi.org)

(2016 reference) The use of a GERT based method to model concurrent product development processes – ScienceDirect

@Tony-Graham I attended a presentation at DAMA Peth last Thursday that demonstrated a data visualisation tool brings that visibility and explain-ability using GenAI-assisted analysis across large collections of documents. It seems to me to be very suited to mess mapping described in your article.

It is a shame our video conference calls wouldn’t allow us to play with Lego models to develop simulation
