We are living in an increasingly complex world, in which all economic, social, technical, environmental, cultural and political factors and processes are evidently interconnected. Traditional project & program management and problem-solving approaches, through simple linear thinking and “quick fixes” that solve issues in isolation, have posed various shortcomings, including failures and even counterproductive consequences.

Since 2017, the United Nations (UN), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have all publicly declared systems thinking to be a key leadership skill that is necessary to deal with the fundamental interconnectedness of complex, local-to-global issues.

This session by Dr. Nam Nguyen, based on his book Systems Thinking for Everyone: The journey from theory to making an impact, will look at the roles of systems thinking and complexity management in successfully delivering complex projects and programs. It also highlights their implications and importance in making decisions, identifying leverage points, effective and systemic strategies for individuals, companies and organizations. Application examples in several complex projects (in different countries and industries) will also be given.

Dr. Nam Nguyen is a systems thinking expert with more than 20 years’ experience teaching, researching and consulting with various companies and organisations in Australia, Asia, Africa, and Europe. He has held several management and leadership roles, most notably and recently being the Director Australia and Southeast Asia with the Malik Management Institute, Switzerland, a world leading organisations for holistic general management, leadership, governance and transformation solutions.

Nam has consulted and delivered training programs to a wide range of Australian state and federal government agencies including South Australian (SA) Health, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO). Internationally, he has worked with the Ministry of Public Security, Vietnam; National Academy for Public Administration, Vietnam; Gates Foundation; UNESCO and UNDP; Brainport Smart District, the Netherland; Allianz Group and Volkswagen Group, Germany, to name but a few. His consulting projects vary from organisational growth and transformation, sustainable development to systems design and complexity management.

Nam is a recipient of the prestigious Davos Australian Leadership Award for being at the forefront of his chosen field – systems thinking and complexity management. He is an Honorary Fellow in the University of Adelaide Business School; an Adjunct Professor at FPT School of Business, Vietnam; a Certificated Talent of the International Academy for Systems and Cybernetics (IASCYS), Vice President (2012-13; 2015-17) of the International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS) and a Vice President (2014-16; 2018-24) of the International Federation for Systems Research (IFSR).

Nam has given keynote presentations at various national and international conferences; and published more than 90 refereed publications.
