WHAT IS THE ICCPM CERTIFICATE IV IN RESPONDING TO PROJECT COMPLEXITY?

Our Cert IV has been re-accredited and superseded by the Certificate IV in Responding to Project Complexity (10916NAT). It provides the same high-level of education that equips project professionals with the essential skill set and tools enabling them to effectively respond to complexity in project environments.

The outcomes in the new course have been influenced by the review of the Complex Project Manager Competency Standards. This is a highly interactive course which gives project professionals useful tools and methodologies, integrating a strong focus on the practical application of concepts to real-world situations.

The Certificate IV in Responding to Project Complexity is a nationally accredited course (10916NAT) designed to give project leaders the skills they need to successfully deliver projects in complex environments. Traditional project management methodologies are necessary but insufficient in complex projects and programs. Project leaders need a complimentary set of skills to respond to the uncertainty, emergence, interdependence and systemic risk within complex projects.

Developed and offered exclusively by ICCPM (RTO #41394), the Certificate IV in Responding to Project Complexity helps project leaders develop the skills and attributes they need to respond to complexity, as defined in the Complex Project Manager Competency Standards. This is a highly interactive course which introduces project leaders to useful tools and methodologies with a strong focus on the practical application of concepts to real-world situations.

  • Develop your professional skills – become a skilled complex project leader
  • Support the success of your organisation – help reduce project costs and increase project success
  • Receive a nationally recognised qualification
  • Receive CPD points from AIPM and Engineers Australia.

The Certificate IV in Responding to Project Complexity (10916NAT) consists of four units of competency and is delivered through three workshops.

Complexity in Project Environments (NAT10916001)
This workshop is a pre-requisite for further study in this course. It develops the foundational knowledge and skills required to recognise when complexity is present in project environments and to select and apply approaches for responding to the identified complexity.
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

• Recognise and report the presence of complexity
• Analyse the impact of complexity
• Develop skills in Systems Thinking and Soft Systems Methodology
• Develop and implement strategies to respond to different types of complexity
• Monitor and evaluate the implementation of these strategies

Systemic Risk and Decision Making (NAT10916004 & NAT10916003)

This workshop develops skills that support effective decision making when faced with complexity and uncertainty. It provides processes and tools for understanding and responding to threats and opportunities (risks).

On successful completion of this workshop, students will be able to:

• Understand the impact of complexity and uncertainty on our ability to evaluate risk and make decisions;
• Understand systemic risk;
• Source and collect risk data
• Map risk in complex environments;
• Decide on a decision support model;
• Contribute to building organisational decision making capacity and capacity to manage risk

Complex Project Leadership (NAT10916002)

This workshop helps participants understand their own leadership style and preferences, understand their work style preferences and the work style preferences of others, and better understand the characteristics of leadership relevant to complex environments.

On successful completion of this workshop, students will be able to:

• Establish team member preferences and team profile
• Maximise team performance in a complex environment
• Evaluate and develop leadership capabilities

ICCPM has carefully structured its assessments to promote the best learning outcomes for participants. To develop the greatest understanding of concepts and mastery of techniques, participants need to fully participate in the workshops and apply the tools and techniques in their workplace. Mastery will be developed through continuous use and reflection.
To be awarded a Certificate IV in Responding to Project Complexity, each of the following assessments must be completed for each of the three workshops and the participant marked “competent”:

1. Observation Report – Completed by facilitator
2. Student Activities Workbook – Completed by student within 2 weeks of workshop. Assessor to mark competent / not yet competent
3. Student Quiz – Completed by student within 2 weeks of workshop. Assessor to mark competent / not yet competent
4. Workplace Project – Completed individually by student within 12 months from commencement of course. Assessor to mark competent / not yet competent

Detailed assessment criteria is provided as part of the course material.

“I needed new ideas to apply in my workplace & this training gave me the insight into appropriate techniques.  Non-scientific, non-reductionist approaches are a blind spot at working level – this problem is exposed by this training.”

Melbourne Student, Lead Through Organisational Complexity Course 2017

“Learning from other’s experiences and thinking about how the course topics related to my workplace were the best aspects of this training. The course is well developed and information presented is of a high quality – I would strongly recommend this course to others.”

Sydney Student, Respond to Complexity in Project Environments, 2017

“It seems like all the projects I’ve worked in lately have been incredibly complex, and existing project and change management approaches do not provide sufficient tools to effectively manage those layers of complexity. When I learned about ICCPM’s Cert IV, I enrolled immediately. Now that I have completed the course, I recommend it highly. The tools we were introduced to were excellent and could be readily applied in real-world situations. The three short courses were well presented, well-paced and interesting, and there was just the right amount of assessment to ensure we understood the topics. I am much better prepared to manage the varied – and inevitable – risk and leadership challenges in complex project environments.”

Jude Burger, Deputy Project Director, Thales, 2017

“The course provided me with valuable opportunity to learn various new tools to break down the topics and expose a different way of thinking about risk, great to achieve an informed position to aid decision making.”

Melbourne Student, Risk and Decision Making in Project Environments, 2017

An interactive session that provided great group discussion and excellent examples from real-world experience.”

Canberra Student, 2017

“I feel better prepared to bring this knowledge to the business and improve my current project. The practical application of the tools, hands on exercises and group exercises were a great way to apply practical application of theory to real-time workplace projects.”

BAE Systems Feedback, 2018

“I didn’t have any knowledge of complexity or directly understand its impact in project management prior to undertaking this course. The facilitator’s ability to disseminate knowledge, engage the class and share experiences was great, training material provided was very useful and the practical application of course content to the workplace have greatly developed my skills and knowledge in this area. A very enjoyable course – thank you!”

Canberra Student, 2017

“ICCPM’s Cert Iv course has helped me understand complexity and its effect on our project environments. A useful mix of education tools and resources to support my learning and various types of engagement (video, activities, group discussion) was very helpful in transplanting theory into practice.”

Sydney Student, 2018

“A course that inspires open-minded thinking and allowance for others’ opinions. I was able to engage not only with colleagues and managers but family and friends as well. It has helped me develop a vocabulary around the complexities that I see not only at workplace but in my personal interactions.”

Course Participant, 2021

“I loved this course. It is a comprehensive course on project complexity – relevant to the now. I’d recommend it to all project & program managers regardless of whether or not you think you do complex projects.”

Course Participant, 2021

“As someone who was new to project management, I still got a lot out of this course. It’s been a fantastic experience and I highly recommend it.”

Course Participant, 2021

“Complexity surrounds us. Knowing how to identify and respond to complexity where it exists is an invaluable leadership skill.”
