ABOUT

AIM

ICCPM conducts Thought Leadership to “Help organisations improve the performance of complex projects by staying at the forefront of complex project leadership.” The International Roundtable Series brings together experienced practitioners and senior academics around the world in Roundtable Workshops to explore the identified theme and harness their collective wisdom to produce new insights and practical steps that organisations can take to improve project outcomes. This Thought Leadership initiative aims to exchange experiences and uncover human insights not captured via data collection or observation alone.

BACKGROUND

The topic of ‘risk’ has been a recurring sub-theme in each of the previous Roundtable Reports, and one that appears to need further, and more detailed enquiry.

The ability to understand and manage risk, as well as the ability to transform risk into opportunity, has a significant impact on organisational success. Risk within complex projects has the potential for even greater impact due to the highly interdependent and emergent nature of complex projects.

At a meeting of the ICCPM Corporate and Academic Partners held on the 20th September 2019, the idea of ‘risk‘ as the 2020 Roundtable topic was discussed. It was agreed that this would make a valuable contribution in the context of both government and private industry projects but it was decided that the focus should rather be placed on ‘emergence’ in complex projects as a broader more encompassing topic which better foregrounds risk, uncertainty and opportunity.

ROUNDTABLE SERIES DURATION

The International Roundtable Series is a 2 year effort. The first 6 months includes working with ICCPM Corporate and Academic Partners to select the series theme, identify the Series Partner and the Anchor Sponsor, identify additional sponsors, plan the schedule of events and arrange the logistics. Roundtable workshops will be held within the 2020 calendar year in the following proposed locations. The analysis and report writing will be undertaken by ICCPM and the Series Partner in early 2021 with the final report to be released no later than mid-2021.

ROUNDTABLE WORKSHOP FORMAT

Roundtable workshops are full day discussions facilitated by ICCPM. Workshops bring together senior project professionals and academics from across sectors to explore the theme using focus questions. Key insights are recorded but contributions are de-identified to encourage frank contributions. ICCPM Members are encouraged to participate in Roundtable workshops.
